Although staffed entirely by volunteers, the service is now widely acclaimed as being the best and most popular. Each volunteer gives only a few hours a week to either produce or present programmes, visit wards to collect requests or generally help in the administration, engineering and running of the station.

We now require more people to help us. Our programmes are middle of the road, Radio 2 style. No experience is needed, only a commitment of one or two hours a week on a regular basis. We will train you, and if you like talking to people and have a sense of fun, and want to help and entertain people in hospitals, then come along and join us, you will be most welcome.

Note: Trust rules require volunteers to be aged 18 or over.

From time to time we hold open evenings when we will show you exactly what we do. Why not come along with your partner, friends and family.

If you would like more information then contact our Membership Secretary, Les Leggett, on a Monday or Thursday evening after 7-30pm on 0161 740-7474 or e-mail him at membership@northernair.org.uk

You can also download our Application Form (PDF). Please complete the form and return it to our Membership Secretary, John Bailey at the address on the form.

Please note: Calls from our studio telephone system to mobile phones are for some inexplicable reason very expensive.  It would help us greatly if you could give us a landline number to contact you on rather than a mobile. Thanks!

Voluntary Services – A Snap Shot
Voluntary ServicesHere at Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust we are very proud to have one of the largest groups of volunteers in the UK with almost 900 volunteers. These volunteers offer their support in the following locations:

• Birch Hill
• Fairfield General Hospital
• North Manchester General Hospital
• North Manchester Community Health Services
• Rochdale Infirmary
• The Royal Oldham Hospital

Volunteers carry out 40 different roles ranging from providing activity programmes on the wards, meal support for inpatients, running a mini bus service, helping in theatres,  cleaning out fish tanks and of course not forgetting running our radio stations!
Within the Voluntary Services office there are two staff: Lynn Butler Voluntary Services Administrator and Mary Sunderland, Volunteer Coordinator. Mary is responsible for the recruitment, management, training, support and governance arrangements in place for all volunteers and is keen to support existing volunteers in any way she can to enable them to carry out their roles to their fullest capacity.
Mary is also responsible for working with different wards and departments to develop new roles for volunteers to ensure the Trust continually improves the experience that patients and their carers have when accessing our services.  Mary said “I have a really rewarding job working with lots of great people who give up their precious time to support the Trust.  I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their dedication, the support that volunteers give really does make a difference to patients, visitors and staff alike”
Volunteers are always welcome to pop in to the office (based opposite the A & E Department at NMGH, and say hello. The kettle will be on!
