Stanley LangerStanley Langer founded Northern Air in 1960, initially as a project of the Rotary Club of Manchester North. Originally Stanley started showing films to the patients, but as they kept falling asleep, Stanley decided in his wisdom to play record requests to a wider audience.

The station broadcast from humble beginnings - an impromptu studio in the assistant Matron’s sitting room at Delauney's Hospital. In 1969, the studio was relocated to a permanent studio in the depths of the basement of Delauney's hospital and then finally to their current studio in 1988.

Northern Air has grown from humble beginnings to a professional organisation since 1960 with a team of dedicated volunteers. Starting from a two and a half hour record request programme on a Thursday evening, Northern Air now broadcasts a full range of programming 24 hours-a-day, 7 days a week including news, requests, music, competitions and sport.

Sadly Stanley passed away in September 1985, but everyone involved with Northern Air believes that Stanley still keeps a distant eye on how things are progressing.
